24-year-old Shares her sad story
Blessing Okechukwu, a 24-year-old Nigerian living in Ghana, said that her uncle had sexually assaulted her twice when she was 12 years old, but her grandparents declared her a liar and beat her up.
Blessing claimed that she was brought to Ghana to live with her grandmother by her father, who was born to a Ghanaian. To avoid the abuse, she had to flee her house, nevertheless.
“My family is the reason I can’t go back home. He raped me twice at age 12, and I told them about it, but they beat me up. They shaved my head, put a block on my head and poured a bowl of water mixed with pepper on me.
At one point, I wanted to take poison, but a friend advised and encouraged me. I stayed with that friend at Essugyir in Cape Coast until she travelled. I was 14 then,” she said.
Blessing revealed during Ghetto Life Story on SVTV Africa that she had considered suicide but was talked out of it by a friend. She eventually relocated to Accra with a friend to pursue a job there.
Blessing said she had nowhere to lay her head. Eventually, the young woman standing in front of shuttered businesses decided to turn to prostitution to support herself.
“I had no choice, so I even take GHs10 because I need to pay my rent. Even with that, I don’t make money often. I only made GHS50 in the last two weeks. The worry makes me smoke,” Blessing added.
Blessing also disclosed to DJ Nyaami that she feels terrible about the life she now leads and is prepared to end it if she receives assistance.
